Before you add an HID Conversion Kit to your vehicle, you need to educate yourselves on what you need to do in order to avoid getting pulled over by an Officer hand be given a ticket. There are various HID Headlights to choose from, but which ones are right? Most of the HID Conversion Kits out there claim on the box that they’re DOT Approved, also known as Department of Transportation. Just because the bulbs you bought claim to be DOT Approved doesn’t mean that you won’t get pulled over.
According to DOT, none of the aftermarket HID Conversion Kits are approved by them. But auto manufacturers have been adding HID Headlights to the newer vehicles nowadays. There really isn’t a hard and fast rule whether these aftermarket headlights are illegal or not. Here are a few tips on avoiding being pulled over and being ticketed by the Police.
For starters, make sure that you stay far away from the cheap HID Conversion Kits out there. If the bulbs are cheap and too good to be true, they usually are. As a matter of fact, a lot of the cheap HID Kits on the market are actually Halogen Bulbs that are disguised as an HID Bulb by adding a blue tint to the lens. So how can you spot a fake from a real HID Bulb? It’s simple. Take a blank, white sheet of paper and put it in the light that’s coming from the bulb. If the bulb is shining a clear and white light, you know that these HID Bulbs are for real. If they shine a blue tint on the light, you now know that they are a fake. This can land you in real trouble because it’s against the law to have other color bulbs on your vehicle and could actually have your vehicle impounded.
Another way to avoid getting in trouble with the law is to make sure that your bulbs are properly placed on your vehicle. If your bulbs are facing upwards and blinding others, you will eventually get pulled over.
One last thing that you should do is don’t get HID Bulbs that are too bright. If you stay within 6000k and 8000k, you should be safe. Any bulbs that are brighter than this will blind other drivers and will even blind you while driving. If the light is glaring on signs and other objects while driving, you need to correct this issue before being pulled over by the Police.
